Talk and demonstration by Japanese expert in the art of Oshibana (Pressed flowers)

December 7, 2024: A captivating talk by Mr Takayuki Tanaka, who works in the President's Office of Nihon Vogue and is manager of the company's Fushigi na Hana Club (which may be translated as 'a club that works wonders with flowers').

With 25 years’ experience in the art of pressed flowers, Tanaka-san told us how he has made it his life's work to promote the hobby and related handcrafts, share knowledge about botanical specimens, and support academic projects. Notably, Nihon Vogue developed kits for botanists to press flowers quickly and efficiently while out in the field, thus allowing them to preserve the original colour of the specimens they find.

Operating since September 2000, the oshibana club is for pressed flower enthusiasts to learn, share and master this centuries old art, which involves using pressed flowers and other botanical materials to create an entire picture. Nihon Vogue has developed special kits for beginners to engage in this craft. Aspiring entrepreneurs can even become instructors!

Mr Tanaka demonstrated how to use pressed flowers (hydrangea petals, maiden hair fern, etc) and paper cutouts (stars, and a reindeer pulling a sleigh) to create a picture, in this case, for placing around a battery-operated candle.
