Guest speaker talk:

Dr. Ray Nickson on the forgotten history of the Nippon Baseball Club

The Nippon Baseball Club was formed in Sydney in 1917; their games were watched by large crowds, where they would contribute to fundraising for the war effort. The Club also donated a silver cup that was awarded to the winner of the District competition for decades after. Despite widespread media coverage at the time, their role has been almost entirely forgotten in Australian sports history. This talk seeks to redress that omission.

Dr. Nickson is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle School of Law and Justice. He is speaking to us as a sports historian, a role in which he fuses his love of sports with research as the leading expert on baseball’s history in Australia. A current project examines the role of migrants from Asia in advancing baseball during the early years of the White Australia policy.

We look forward to seeing you at the AGM.

Anita Byrnes, President
