Urban Planning – building modern cities the Japanese way

Urban Renaissance Agency (UR) is bringing Japan's urban development model to Australia.

At this event you will hear about the:

  • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NSW government in November 2018 along with a Consultancy Agreement with the Western Parkland City Authority; and

  • MoU signed this year in March with the Victorian government, providing for collaboration and coordinated efforts to promote urban development in Victoria, along with investment from Japanese companies.

How can the Japanese model of urban development assist Australia to solve the current housing crisis and plan for more liveable cities? Japan's Urban Renaissance Agency brings its experience with smart cities and transit-oriented developments to Australia.

Originally established in 1955 as the Japan Housing Corporation to address urban and housing agendas in Japan, the Urban Renaissance Agency is a semi-governmental organisation that has worked both in public and private spheres. It established its Sydney office in 2021.

UR's goal for business in Australia is to use its experience particularly with transit-oriented development (TODs). TODs are generally seen as one solution to Australia's housing crisis, permitting medium or high-density housing close to transport hubs, along with the development of station-front areas and public facilities.
