MEET AN AUSTRALIAN NETSUKE SCULPTOR & ARTIST: LEIGH SLOGGETT

Netsuke are small toggles used by (usually) men wearing kimono to hang small objects from their sash or obi. A wearable Japanese art form, they developed more than three hundred years ago but with the advent of Western clothing during the Meiji period their use declined.

They are still very collectible however, and more recently modern schools of netsuke carving have revived the art.

We are excited to welcome Leigh Sloggett, a Melbourne-based netsuke carver, to talk about netsuke, their history, the carving tools and techniques, and to show us his creations. It will be an interactive talk with Q&A.

BIO

Leigh Sloggett began carving netsuke in 1992 and then moved to Japan in 1993 to study netsuke carving under Bishu Saito. Since then his work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, including the British Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum, and can be found in many important private collections including H.I.H Prince Takamado Collection.  His Netsuke are also in the collections of the Museum of Fine Art Boston, Tokyo National Museum and Kyoto Seishu Netsuke Art Museum.  In 1997 NHK produced a short documentary about Leigh's netsuke.  Since 1993 he has exhibited in Japan several times each year.
