Walking in Japan

We are pleased to welcome John McBride to talk about walking in Japan. Long-time Japan specialist, John has developed and led many different history and art tours in Japan, many of which involve walking historical trade and pilgrim routes. His knowledge of and familiarity with Japan has given many Australians new perspectives on Japanese history and culture, as well as enabling them to explore some beautiful and hidden countryside.

Speaker bio

After studying in Japan and Australia, John McBride began his career at the Australia-Japan Research Centre, ANU, before joining Ansett Australia to establish flights into Ōsaka, Japan. Later he was Chief Executive of News Corporation Japan.

Returning to live in Sydney in 2003, John has continued his interest in matching texts about ancient, natural and contemporary history with his walking, both in Australia and Japan. John has designed walks for Walk Japan and regularly enjoys leading groups of Australians on the Tokaido, Nakasendo, Kumano Kodo, Narrow Road to the Deep North, and Shikoku 88 Temples.  He leads an annual art tour to Japan for the Art Gallery of NSW Society through Renaissance Tours.

John was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his support of Australia-Japan cultural and business links, and for supporting young artists and arts institutions. He is a licensed tea master of the Omotesenke School.
