  Ever heard of Onoresho? No? Well, this event will introduce you to a truly creative method of ‘writing’ script.

  Described as a blend of both art and writing, Onoresho allows you to let your creative juices flow. There are no strict rules, you don’t need to be artistically gifted, and you don’t even need to know about traditional Japanese calligraphy. It is an event everyone can enjoy and promises to be a fun-filled way to start the Year of the Snake!

  We are extremely fortunate to have Senior Grand Master Eriko Yamakawa as our presenter from Japan for this event. She was initially an instructor in brush calligraphy, a style of lettering that uses brush pens, but switched to Onoresho in September 2020. She has been working as a Jōseki Shihan (Senior Grand Master) since December 2021. Her onoresho studio in Tsurugashima (Saitama Prefecture) has produced 12 Shihan (Grand Masters), and she currently has more than 20 students learning to become Shihan. She also offers online lessons if you’re interested in learning more.

  v  Participants will need to prepare the following:

  • Watercolours or kids’ paint set (with green, orange, blue, pink, etc)
  • Brush No. 6 and Brush No. 0 (Kinokuniya or art shops) or use a Japanese ink pen, watercolour pencils, kids’ paintbrushes, etc.
  • Strong paper (eg, sketchbook paper)
  • Water
